Many people assume they are for runners only. This is simply not the case. In fact a mentor of mine stated “Fifty percent of your patients desperately need Orthotics and the other fifty percent will merely benefit tremendously from having them.” While I tend not to go quite that far, he has a point.
Orthotics run from soft, to semi rigid or rigid and can actually be purchased over the counter as in Super Feet or Dr. Shoals. Personally I prefer to make the soft ones as they DO provide sufficient support and yet are far more comfortable than their more rigid contemporaries.
Why wouldn’t I want the over the counter orthotics as opposed to the custom ones which clearly cost more. The difference is over the counter orthotics are not made for you, your feet, your mechanics and the issues you may be trying to correct.
Sadly the typical layperson has been marketed by many of these over the counter companies to the extent that they believe a one size fits all approach works. Some people may feel some relief just from extra padding in the shoe but for most of us, a custom product that takes into account our particular joint mechanics is far more effective than a generic insole.
If you are curious to find out if you are a candidate for custom foot orthotics, feel free to call Dr. Camp at 415 922 2225 for a complimentary consultation.
As always, thanks for reading.
